This quantity of the LNCS sequence comprises the papers accredited for presentation on the 3rd IFIP overseas operating convention on lively networks (IWAN 2001). The workshop used to be held on the Sheraton collage urban lodge, in Philadelphia united states, and was once hosted via the collage of Pennsylvania. energetic networks goal to ease the creation of community companies by means of including dynamic programmability to community units comparable to routers, and making facets of the programmability available to clients. energetic networks examine has fascinated with the advance and checking out of lively options, that allow dynamic programmability in a networked surroundings. those options have a large choice of functions. At IWAN 2001 we aimed to assemble individuals of many of the groups utilizing energetic and similar innovations, and supply a discussion board for dialogue and collaboration, related to researchers, builders, and capability clients. Papers provided at IWAN 2001 lined the appliance of lively recommendations to many facets of community dependent communique, together with lively multicast, energetic QoS, energetic protection, energetic GRIDs, and lively administration. furthermore, there have been papers on architectures, language, and API concerns. even supposing there have been simply 22 submissions, the traditional of the ten authorised papers used to be very excessive. This indicated truly quite a lot of ongoing prime quality study in energetic networking, regardless of the present adverse financial stipulations within the telecommunications undefined. The papers additionally tested that the examine is certainly international, and justifies a global workshop of this sort. we wish to thank all of the authors who submitted their work.

Since the programs are written in hardwaredecodable instruction set, they can be executed immediately. In an ideal situation where every instruction is executed in a clock and there is no loop or backward jump in the program, the packet goes through the execution unit in a pipeline. The pipeline works at the speed of the network, the same as the required one. In reality it is impossible to prevent pipeline stall completely. Routing table lookup causes memory access, and some instructions such as the calculation of checksum are almost impossible to complete in a clock.
